Raise Children to "Global Citizens"

Our trademark after-school program has won many awards from NYC! We have partnered with New york City Parks and Recreation Department to provide the EJC to hundreds of children in all five boroughs.

Purpose:

To educate children to be "Global Citizens" by exposing them to different cultures and value systems, so that children learn to respect and appreciate people from different backgrounds and strengthen their global competence.

Activities:

Weekly sessions are provided, with volunteers who interact with children to teach Japanese cooking, tea ceremony, martial arts, calligraphy, language, dance, origami, karaoke, etc.

Beneficiaries:

Children enrolled in after-school programs (6-13 years old)

Locatioons:

After-school program sites (Recreation centers and schools throughout all five boroughs in NYC)

Japanese Spa Day

Enrich the lives of senior citizens

NY de Volunteer organizes the innovative beauty volunteering program, Japanese Spa Day, to enrich the lives of senior citizens in New York. In the Japanese tradition of honoring senior members of communities, dedicated volunteers serve senior citizens to spread goodwill, improved intercultural relations, and create a dialog based on mutual understanding and tolerance.

Purpose:

To enrich the lives of senior citizens in New York.

Activities:

Provide cosmetic treatments such as a haricut, hand massage, make-up, and nails.

Share Japanese Culture such as Origami and classical Japanese dace.

Beneficiaries:

About 100 Senior citizens

Locatioons:

Nursing homes, hospitals, and retirement communities

This program is made possible by the generous support of the Japanese Medical Society of America, Shiseido USA, and cosmetic companies.

We hold fundraising events every few months. The event is a charity to raise money for NYdV's flagship program the "Explore Japanese Culture After School Program" aka "EJC" where we teach inner-city children about the Japanese culture. Since starting the EJC program we have reached out to over 1,000 children. The programs consistent growth and longevity is all thanks to your donations.

Office/Event Space

We are looking for someone who can freely lend partial space of their office. As our business expands, we need space for our staff. Also, We are looking for free space to run orientations and workshops. So far, we have occasionally used classrooms at schools which our staff were enrolled. But as they graduated, those spaces became unavailable.

Noriko Hino

Founder/Executive Director

Ms. Hino is a visionary social entrepreneur and an innovator. She has pioneered innovative volunteer programs for NYdV that address social issues, and have tirelessly dedicated herself for over 10 years to mobilizing and inspiring the Japanese and American communities in the US to volunteer. She is an irreplaceable, charismatic leader for NYdV and a special talent for transforming ideas into solid actions and achievements. Highly effective in establishing a strong collaborative environment to elicit the best from team members. Recognized for exceptional drive and skills for motivating others.

With over 20 years of project and general management experience in diverse fields including non profit management, event planning, creative design, and information technology, Noriko brings a proven track record of success to NYdV. From its very inception, she has led NYdV with a strong leadership and clear vision. While her management expertise is crucial to the success of NYdV, Noriko’s true strength lies in her ability to inspire and motivate people with her charismatic personality and strong drive. This distinctive skill has enabled Noriko to build a strong team of core volunteer staff to drive the organization and its mission forward over the past nine years. A founder and executive director, Noriko is the true heart and soul of NYdV.

Completed the Institute for Not-for-Profit Management Program at Columbia Business School.

Kazumi Terada

Co-Founder/Board Member

Kazumi Terada is the co-founder of NY de Volunteer. She was also the key facilitator for the first 9/11 Memorial Floating Lantern Ceremony, which has been held annually since 2002. She was born in Japan, grew up in Texas, and has been living in New York City since 1992. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design, with a degree in architecture. Most of her career has been in the internet industry, working for web agencies, global e-commerce sites, and internet advertising agencies. She was the president and co-founder of Fifth Line Group, LLC, a visual communication company, between 2004-2008. She is currently a bilingual Japanese/English consultant and design researcher at Panasonic Design Center of America. She has also been a treasurer and board member of another 501(c)3 organization, Mahayogi Yoga Mission, since 2000.

Taka Juba

Board Member

Takahisa Juba began volunteering with NY de Volunteer in 2006 at the first Explore Japanese Culture After School Program in New York. Since then he has continued to teach the program throughout NYC. Seeing the impact of the program and the organization’s commitment and dedication he later became a board member of NY de Volunteer. Taka is committed to helping the disenfranchised and creating opportunities for the underprivileged. He graduated from Fordham University School of Law in 2015, Order of the Coif, magna cum laude, where he was a Crowley Scholar, focusing on human rights and international law. During law school, he worked in Ghana at the national human rights institution and in Bangladesh at a leading legal aid organization. In addition, he brings over 20 years of practical and managerial business and international experience, running his own importing and distribution company, heading a sourcing operation in Hong Kong for one of largest seasonal lighting companies, and working in marketing for Panasonic. He received his bachelor’s degree with honors in International Relations and Japanese from Claremont McKenna College.
